Janie Sunderlin
D.O.B. 03/23/1954
Born: Morgantown, West Virginia
Residence; Harpersfield Ohio
Janie although being born in a rural atmosphere in West Virginia was moved to the urban cities of Ohio at the young age of 5. She was raised in the asphalt jungle and lost most of her outdoors interest. Taught to be a prim and proper lady and live the life of an urban girl and later housewife she struggled with the loss of her initial upbringing. After two unsuccessful marriages and one beautiful young daughter, Stacey, she met her present husband, Dale. Dale was raised in the traditions of the outdoors sports and also had two unsuccessful marriages mainly because of his passion for the outdoors. Upon their blissful union Janie was give a choice, hunt with me or hunt for me. Her choice was quick and simple, "Will you buy me a bow and help me learn" A resounding yes was the answer. After mastering the art of Bow Hunting she progressed into shotgun hunting in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania for turkey and deer. From there to rifle hunting in the states of Pennsylvania and Maryland. During this progression a tragic event befell the Sunderlin's. Dale lost his oldest daughter, Wendy. Several years passed before they both could truly enjoy the outdoors as they did before. One early morning while listening to the radio news the Columbine shootings were being reported. Both of their hearts fell in desperation at what had happened. A comment was made, "we have to do something, this has to stop, children killing children just is not right". Thus out of this early morning tragic reporting came the idea for "Camp Camo'. Camp Camo is an organization dedicated to teaching children the safe, proper and ethical use of firearms and archery tools. Now they must make themselves credible to parents, how? After much investigation they came up with a plan. Many hours of schooling were necessary. First came the Ohio Hunter Education Academy, Then Certification through the National Rifle Association, rifle, pistol, shotgun and range safety officers. On to International and National Bow Hunter educators, and last but not least Boy Scout Merit Badge Instructors in rifle, shotgun and archery. Next how do we get the word out about what we're trying to do? They hit every conservation club and chapter of national organizations in the Ashtabula County area and some surrounding counties, Lake and Geauga. Forming a board of directors from hand picked friends who are as adamant about the outdoors and teaching children was next on the list as they obtained their National 501(c)3 status. After several years of hard work and perseverance they are finally being recognized as the powers who are the guru's of children's outdoors education. Volunteering their efforts at such events as The NWTF's Women In The Outdoors, NWTF's Jakes Day for kid, of which they are now the chairpersons, NWTF's Wheeling Sportsmen, the NRA's Women On Target, NRA's Youth Sportsfest, Ted Nugent's Kamp For Kids, Boy Scouts Merit Badge programs as well as several hunter and bow hunter education classes through out the year.
All the while Janie has held down a full time job and maintained her family still finding time to hunt and be in the outdoors. Harvesting several animals along the way, deer, turkey and wild boar to name a few. Since the Ohio Conceal Carry law has passed they have been instructing hundreds of people in their classes and are the top trainers in the Northeast Ohio area. Paying special attention to women and their concerns give her special satisfaction in this area.
Janie holds Firearms and Hunting Instructor Certifications through the NRA, State of Ohio, IBEF / NBEF Bow Hunters Organizations and the Boy scouts of America. Truly one of the most educated and certified women in the industry. In her community she is a very sought after person when it come to outdoors training for women and children. Through her efforts and the efforts of Camp Camo, of which she is a founding director, she has influenced the lives of thousands of beginners to the outdoors and shooting sports.
